There is a growing body of scientific evidence that many everyday cosmetics and household products contain harmful chemicals that can negatively affect human health.
These ingredients are added to extend shelf lives, improve fragrances, enhance textures, and overall make products stand out amongst the thousands of competitors. Often, harmful chemicals are not intentionally added to products, but are contaminants associated with certain ingredients and manufacturing processes. In the United States, there is very little regulation of these harmful ingredients and contaminants.
The good news is that these harmful ingredients are avoidable! We’ve done the research on which products are safe, so you don’t have to.
Many brands and products claim to be “clean” or “natural,” but there is no universally agreed-upon definition of what these terms mean. Regardless of whether or not a product claims to be non-toxic, to pass our test, it has to:
- Have complete ingredient disclosure. Many harmful chemicals hide behind the ingredient “fragrance” or “parfum.”
- Contain no chemicals known to cause endocrine disruption.
- Contain no chemicals known to increase cancer risk.

- Breast Cancer Prevention Partners’ (BCPP) Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Glossary of Breast Cancer Exposures. BCPP is a national organization working to eliminate toxic chemicals and other environmental exposures that lead to breast cancer and other health concerns, and their guidelines for reducing exposure to harmful chemicals are backed by extensive research.
- The Silent Spring Institute is a scientific research organization working to uncover environmental causes of breast cancer and other health concerns. They provide valuable information and guidelines on avoiding harmful chemicals commonly found in households and cosmetics.
- The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a helpful resource for analyzing ingredient labels. In addition to chemicals linked to cancer and endocrine disruption, EWG is concerned with chemicals that may cause allergies and ecological contamination. Products with the EWG Verified stamp are free of all chemicals we are concerned about.
How many of us have tried a natural deodorant that leaves us smelling like lavender… and BO? We want to give you products that you LOVE so you can confidently ditch the old ones.
Our favorite sources for product testing are Wirecutter from the New York Times and Consumer Reports, but we will scour the whole internet for information on products that are the best of their kind. Once a product passes our non-toxic test and has proven good results, we list it on our guides. We test many products ourselves, and mark our favorites with our logo.
There is growing interest in nontoxic products. Many beauty brands like Allure and Sephora have “clean” product lines, and it is increasingly common to see products labeled as “natural”. However, there is no universally agreed upon standard for what “clean” and “natural” mean or which chemicals they exclude. We always cross-check non-toxic recommendations from product review sites with our own strict standards.

Consumer Reports is an independent, nonprofit member organization that reviews and tests products to advise consumer decision-making.
